The city
Under the supervision of Bayle (the royal judge), who represented the king, and administered by a local council elected by the inhabitants, the bastide grew into a kind of housing estate. In an area of 225 m by 175m with the square in the centre, the village had four main roads intersected by smaller arteries that led to the outskirts and gardens. The village was fortifed from 1320.
